David and Corin Mellor

David Mellor CBE was a design titan. Best known for his cutlery, he also designed so many items in the public realm that anyone passing through the UK will have touched his work, quite literally. From traffic lights to the square postbox, pedestrian crossing boxes and bollards, he has had a huge influence on the nation’s look, and his body of work is immense.

Mellor trained as a silversmith, then became famed for his stainless-steel and silver cutlery and kitchenalia, including his Pride cutlery of 1953 and his 1963 Embassy teapot. Married to art and design historian Fiona MacCarthy, their son Corin picked up his father’s mantle as a designer, and they worked together on items such as the 1998 Transit folding trolley for Magis of Italy.

Although his father died in 2009, Corin has long been creative director of David Mellor Design, introducing new designs like their Linear table glasses and Black-handled kitchen knives of 2007. Based in Derbyshire, Corin maintains the integrity and restrained elegance associated with the Mellor name.

At Harry CJ Wix we stock David Mellor’s much-loved Café cutlery, elegant knife and cheese sets, salt and pepper mills, children’s cutlery and tableware sets and cast iron candleholders.
