When he founded Case Furniture in 2005 Paul Newman’s vision was simple – to bring good design to a wide audience at affordable prices. In doing so, Newman brought his considerable experience to bear as a designer and entrepreneur, skilfully building upon the design awareness that blossomed in the UK at the end of the 20th century, and the subsequent demand for better furniture.
After graduating in 1981, Newman began Bonomi Design, establishing links with high-calibre clients such as Liberty, Heal’s and Ron Arad. A fortuitous meeting at the Milan Furniture Fair in 1988 with Australian brand Aero Design led to Newman establishing its first UK branch and by the end of the decade Aero was selling to stores such as Heal's and The Conran Shop.
By the time he established Case, Newman’s reputation was such that he could draw on designers such as Matthew Hilton, Terence Woodgate, Shin Azumi, David Irwin and Nazanin Kamali. In doing so, Case Furniture widened the design market further, creating furniture, accessories and all manner of products by using traceable and trustworthy design taking account of form, function and the supply chain.
A key principle for Case that it uses materials that are durable, rigorously tested and designed to last. As Newman says, his simple promise to the customer is “to not make you choose between quality and price”.
