Unfolding – Climate Regulating is a limited edition relief print by British artist Sam Hodge, made using ink derived from natural pigment sourced from West Runton, Norfolk. Each print is made from unfolded packaging, pressed onto grey Somerset paper — a work that draws on the rich organic and geological deposits of the Norfolk coastline.

About Sam Hodge

Sam Hodge works with print and paint to explore what materials can do and what stories they tell. Through her focus on transformations in matter over time, she investigates our entanglement with the material world and our reactions to its shifting, unstable nature.

Hodge finds emergent patterns of growth and disintegration in paint and print processes that echo those found in geological and biological systems. She interacts with the dynamic and generative properties of paint — pouring, tipping, pooling — allowing rivulets to erode and branch, or paint to settle, diffuse, and crack as it dries. She does not regard her works as static objects, but expects them to continue changing slowly throughout their lifetimes.

She often makes her own pigments, paints, and inks from found materials — earth, plants, and the detritus of human activity — connecting her work directly to the geological, biological, and human stories of the landscapes she walks through. On urban and coastal walks, Hodge is drawn to discarded objects metamorphosed by accident or weathering. Using drawing, photographic processes, and direct impressions etched into printing plates (analogous to fossilisation), she creates images that draw attention to the organic, animate nature of these transforming things.
